AFRICAN AMERICAN MUSEUM OF SOUTHERN ILLINOIS: 2021 Makeup Trends

African American Museum of Southern Illinois recently issued the following announcement.

Many of us have used our time spent at home to perfect skills and try out new things, and thanks to all that pent up creativity, we’re excited about this year's new makeup trends to try out. Whether you’re still at home or you’re beginning to step out into the world again, experimenting with makeup can help get you back into a sense of routine and add some normalcy to a time that certainly isn’t normal. Here are the trends in makeup for 2021:

Minimalistic Routines Can you get your whole makeup routine finished in under 10 minutes? If so, you already have the first trend down. Minimalistic routines are all about simplicity and playing up your best features instead of covering up what you don’t necessarily love. A swipe of blush to bring out your cheekbones, strategic eyeliner to brighten your eyes, or a touch of bronzer to give you that sun-kissed glow are all simple things you can do that, by themselves, will instantly enhance your face. Focus more on skin care than skin covering, and your makeup routine will naturally shorten.

Creative Eyeliner If you do your eyeliner the same way every time (a bit on the waterline, a touch on the lid), now is your chance to branch out. “Graphic” liner is a big trend, which involves drawing your liner in ways that you normally wouldn’t, such as much longer, more exaggerated wings or bold lines on the crease of your eyelid. These looks are typically featured on the runway, but why not bring the runway to you?

Get the Glow Many of us have probably gotten a lot less sun than we’d like recently, but you can still recreate that soft, warm glow of the outdoors! Dewy skin, sometimes called dolphin skin, is a trending look that offers a youthful appearance and gives the skin a plump and smooth look. Serums, luminous foundations and primers, and highlighters are going to be your best friends, but the best way to achieve this look is to start with a good, clean base by keeping your skin moisturized and nourished.

Cool Tone Colors While you’re creating your graphic liner, consider what colors you’re using. The trending makeup colors for the year are blue and purple, and they’re anything but subtle. From eyeshadow to mascara and eyeliner, lilac purples and turquoise blues are the colors to go for. The brighter, the better! Make sure to choose a shade that complements your skin tone, and add a bit of shine or glitter over the top to really give that pop.

Lip Stain over Lipstick We all love lipstick, but sometimes you want something different and more long-lasting. That’s why lip stain is the choice of the year. Lip stain is typically glossier and more gel-like, and as the name suggests, it adds a color stain to the lips that uses the natural color of your lips as a base. Lip stains can be drying, though, so be sure to continue using balm to keep your lips moisturized.

The best thing about this year’s makeup trends is that they all go perfectly together! Glowing skin, graphic eyeliner, and lip stain create a complete look that’s straight from the runway. Use these trends to put together your signature look, and greet the year with a fresh face!
