State Representative Paul Jacobs addressed the Illinois Mining Institute (IMI) at their annual meeting in Marion, Illinois. He also joined a legislative roundtable discussion focused on his efforts to repeal the Climate and Equitable Jobs Act (CEJA) to boost the mining sector in southern Illinois.

Jacobs remarked, “When people think of mining, I think most people only envision coal miners or oil rig workers, but the reality is that rocks and minerals such as limestone, clay, and silica come from mining right under our feet here in Illinois.” He added that minerals from Illinois are integral to producing everyday items like medicines, vitamins, toothpaste, gym shoes, soap, nylon clothing, and kitty litter.

During the meeting, Jacobs discussed legislation he co-sponsored with Representatives Patrick Windhorst and Dave Severin aimed at repealing what he referred to as Illinois’ failed “Green New Deal.” As Chief Co-Sponsor on HB 4087 and HB 4088, Jacobs introduced measures labeled “Energize Illinois” to revoke CEJA and explore ways to restore power plants for improved electricity affordability and reliability.

The IMI is committed to advancing the mining industry in Illinois by promoting education and training in practical and scientific mining. The organization supports the study of mining issues and shares accurate information about mining for its members' benefit.
