How much has Herrin CUSD 4 overspent over the past 10 years?

Herrin Community Unit School District 4 accumulated $28.93 million in debt between fiscal years 2008 and 2017, according to a Carbondale Reporter analysis of public schools data.

Spending and revenue data obtained for this analysis comes from the Illinois Local Education Agency Retrieval Network (ILEARN), which is part of the Illinois State Board of Education and collects data annually on school district financials.

Over the 10-year span, Herrin CUSD 4 reported 17.5 percent more revenue. At the same time, total spending went down 20 percent. The resulting deficit shrunk by 96.1 percent from 2008 to 2017.
