After a 34-year career as Brehm Preparatory School's director of athletics and a physical education teacher, "Coach" Gregory Douglas has announced his retirement.
Douglas has been a part of Brehm literally from the start, attending meetings at Denny's before construction of the school even began. Douglas met his wife, Terri, at the school, where she is director of educational services, and the two married in 2006.
While still very physically fit, "Coach" has been slowed down a bit by multiple major surgeries over the past few years. But he still walks, bikes and stretches almost daily, and even practices yoga. He also managed to sneak yoga into his PE classes, teaching students some of the stretches without mentioning they were from yoga.
Douglas said he doesn't plan to slow down in retirement, planning to exercise "every day of my life as long as I am able," and will use the free time to spend more time with his family.
Brehm Prep honored Douglas' career by renaming the school gym "The Greg 'Coach' Douglas Gym" at a ceremony on June 7. Also, the school has established the Greg Douglas Honorary Scholarship Fund, helping to offset tuition costs for students at Brehm. Tax-deductible donations for the fund can be mailed to: Brehm School Foundation, 950 S. Brehm Lane, Carbondale, IL 62901. For more information, go to www.Breh.org/Foundation or call 618-457-0371.
