Southern Illinois University’s men’s basketball team is preparing for a challenging 17-day stretch that will see them play five games in four different locations. The Salukis began their journey on Monday, with the first matchup scheduled against Nevada at Lawlor Events Center in Reno on Wednesday at 9 p.m. CST.
Over this period, SIU will spend 12 days traveling as part of its nonconference schedule. After facing Nevada, the team will play North Dakota State in Fargo on November 18, Delaware and UAB at the Jacksonville Classic in Florida on November 23 and 24 respectively, and conclude this road sequence with a game against Memphis on November 26. Fans can follow all games via the Saluki Radio Network.
Redshirt senior guard Isaiah Stafford commented on the importance of these trips for team cohesion: "The character that's built on road trips comes through us being connected. Everywhere you play is hostile. It's about building trust with your teammates."
Following a recent victory over UMKC, head coach Scott Nagy announced that freshmen Luke Walsh and Daniel Paulikonis would redshirt this season to focus on development. Walsh expressed anticipation about gaining experience during away games: "I'm looking forward to learning from the road trips. It's a hard environment to play in."
Senior guard Davion Sykes emphasized leadership during these travels: "We have a lot of new guys, a lot of freshmen that haven't experienced it," he said. "We just want to show them the ropes. It's a business trip, but being on the road in someone else's house is really exciting."
Sophomore forward Rolyns Aligbe highlighted how playing away presents unique challenges: "The other team's student section fuels the fire," he said. "You have to create your own energy."
The Salukis’ next home game will be held at Banterra Center against Arkansas-Little Rock at 6 p.m., Saturday, November 29. Tickets are available online at saluk.is/43XgPSU.
