The Southern Illinois University men's golf team is set to participate in the Ka'anapali Classic, an annual tournament held in Lahaina, Hawaii. The event begins on Monday, October 27, and will last three days, with teams playing 18 holes each day.
This year's Ka'anapali Classic includes a strong field of competitors. The Salukis are scheduled to compete against six high-major programs as well as several top mid-major schools. The University of Hawaii will serve as the host for the tournament.
Southern Illinois will be represented by a five-man lineup: Anthony De Schutter, Michael Mikus, Jaeseung Na, Blake Saffell, and Ben Keil. All five golfers participated in the team's previous competition at the Purdue Fall Invitational in West Lafayette, Indiana, where SIU finished seventh. Additionally, Frank Bellino, Lucas Lasley and Oliver Ulrich will compete as individuals. As of now, the Salukis are ranked 91st nationally.
Anthony De Schutter has been leading the team this season. He recently became only the second player from Southern Illinois to win three tournaments in a single season after his victory at Purdue Fall Invitational. According to the release: "The group has been led by Anthony De Schutter, who is quickly establishing himself not only as one of, if not the best golfer in the Missouri Valley Conference, but one of the best in the country."
Weather forecasts predict warm conditions with temperatures reaching into the mid-80s during play. There is a possibility of rain showers on Tuesday afternoon.
