Deaconess Illinois has introduced a new program called Breast Check Fridays to increase access to breast cancer screenings for women over 40 in Southern Illinois. The initiative coincides with Breast Cancer Awareness Month and will run on the first four Fridays of October at three Deaconess Illinois locations: Crossroads in Mt. Vernon, Medical Center in Marion, and Union County in Anna.
Women can receive a 3D mammogram without needing an appointment or a doctor’s order during these events. Each Friday will feature themed activities aimed at creating a supportive environment while patients wait for their screenings.
Katie Warren, MHA, RT(R)(CT)(ARRT), Illinois Regional Director of Radiology, said: “We know early detection saves lives, but many women delay or avoid mammograms due to inconvenience or anxiety. Breast Check Fridays are about creating a welcoming environment where women feel supported, informed and empowered to take control of their health.”
Imaging Director Paula Dodillet, RT(R)(CT)(ARRT), added: “We’re meeting women where they are—physically and emotionally. Whether it’s cookies or conversation, these simple moments can turn a routine screening into something meaningful and memorable.”
The planned activities include decorating pink cookies on October 3 to honor survivors and fighters, making friendship bracelets with encouraging words on October 10, writing uplifting messages for a community mural on October 17, and decorating mini pumpkins with glitter and gems on October 24.
The program is targeted at women aged 40 and older who are due for routine mammograms. By removing the need for appointments or doctor’s orders, Deaconess Illinois aims to lower barriers to care and encourage more women to participate in regular screenings.
