State Representative Paul Jacobs has successfully advanced House Bill 1341 through the State Government Administration Committee. The bill, which was passed unanimously on Wednesday, aims to establish a task force to explore potential new uses for the Tamms Minimum Security Unit and its surrounding property.
Rep. Jacobs emphasized the importance of utilizing existing resources effectively. "When we don’t utilize the assets and resources we have right under our feet, the cost to the community and taxpayers, and the lost opportunities are great," he stated. He suggested several possible repurposing options, including mental health services, public safety training, and medical training facilities. "I can’t wait to see all of the options that the Task Force recommends," he added.
The task force will operate without compensation for its members and is required to meet at least twice annually or as convened by its chairperson. Administrative support will be provided by the Department of Corrections. A report with recommendations is expected to be submitted to both the Governor and General Assembly by December 31st.
The Tamms Correctional Center, located in Alexander County, has been inactive since its closure. It was originally established with funds largely donated by local residents who anticipated economic benefits from a prison facility in their area.
House Bill 1341 now awaits consideration by the full House.
