Four University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign faculty members were honored with the 2022 Campus Awards for Excellence in Faculty Leadership.

The Office of the Provost sponsors the campus-level awards in recognition of faculty members who distinguish themselves in their vision of the future and their efforts to enable and promote others in shaping that future.

The 2022 recipients, with insights provided by their nominators, followed by the four recipients from 2021:

Michelle Perry, a professor of educational psychology, received the Excellence in Faculty Mentoring Award, which recognizes a faculty member who demonstrates an outstanding commitment to faculty mentoring by actively assisting pre-tenure and mid-career faculty members in career development.

Perry’s sustained commitment to mentorship has impacted the successful careers of many throughout the College of Education. Her passion for connecting with people combined with her more than 30 years of experience as a professor and former department chair helps to bring valuable insights to mentees. Above all, her guidance and continual support has empowered faculty members to find new ways to contribute to university missions while supporting their individual interests within research and teaching.

May Berenbaum, a professor and department head of entomology, and Alan T. Mette, a professor and director of the School of Art and Design, received the Executive Officer Distinguished Leadership Award, which recognizes outstanding academic leadership and vision by an executive officer within a college or campus unit.

Berenbaum has led the entomology department with vision for over 30 years. Her capacity to lead and inspire faculty, staff and graduate students can be seen across all areas of achievement, including research, teaching, public engagement and service. From recruitment to mentoring, Berenbaum pursues exciting new directions in scholarship while continuing to distinguish Illinois as a global leader in the field of entomology and sciences.

Since being appointed director of the School of Art and Design in 2015, Mette has demonstrated achievement in undergraduate recruitment, faculty hiring, advocacy and management. From increasing community development and public engagement to promoting responsible stewardship of resources, the school has seen valuable improvements under Mette’s leadership.

Jennifer R. Amos, a teaching professor of bioengineering, received the Outstanding Faculty Leadership Award. The award recognizes a faculty member who provides extraordinary leadership contributions across many dimensions of shared governance that advance the excellence of a unit, a college or the campus, and who exemplifies the campus commitment to collaborative decision-making.

Amos’ leadership has shaped strategies for effecting change across campus. With leadership positions within the Grainger College of Engineering and Carle Illinois College of Medicine, as well as leading campuswide committees, task forces and working groups, she is known for working diligently with individuals across campus to improve university policies and projects. From hosting listening sessions to engaging broadly with surveys, her commitment to shared governance can best be seen in her ability to ensure all voices are heard.

Four University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign faculty members were also honored with the Campus Awards for Excellence in Faculty Leadership in 2021.

Monica Fabiani, a professor of psychology, received the Excellence in Faculty Mentoring Award for her outstanding commitment to faculty mentoring.

Antony Augoustakis, a professor of classics, and Jeff Moore, a professor of chemistry and director of the Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology, both received the Executive Officer Distinguished Leadership Award for their outstanding academic leadership and vision.

Gay Miller, a professor of pathobiology, received the Outstanding Faculty Leadership Award for her extraordinary leadership contributions across many dimensions of shared governance and collaborative decision-making.
