The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) is providing an additional $300,000 in state funding for the Southern Illinois Multi-Modal Station (SIMMS) project, according a release by the Carbondale Chamber of Commerce.
The proposed SIMMS project aims to design and construct a new multi-modal transportation center in downtown Carbondale to serve a population that is currently underserved. Riders will be able to utilize services to more directly connect to points as far as 120 miles away.
“The City of Carbondale has been working with IDOT’s Transit office since 2015 to plan for the project, and appreciate their long-term commitment to the City. Together with our BUILD grant that was awarded in 2019, the City has now secured $16.8 million in funding for SIMMS,” said City Manager Gary Williams.
Funding is being provided through the IDOT’s Office of Intermodal Project Implementation and brings IDOT’s total contribution to the project up to $2.8 million.
Construction of the transportation center is scheduled to begin spring 2022 with completion predicted for spring 2024.
