On September 4, 1991, Illinois named the bluegill as its official state fish. The bluegill is a common species in Illinois waters and has long been popular among local anglers.

Severin, a Republican, was elected to the Illinois State House in 2023 to represent the state's 116th House District, replacing previous state representative David Friess.
