CARBONDALE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE: Freecycle at Gaia House Aug 23-25

Carbondal

Carbondale Chamber of Commerce recently issued the following announcement.

Anyone looking to downsize or just clear clutter is invited to bring items (in good condition) that are no longer needed to a Freecycle Exchange at Gaia House, 913 S Illinois Avenue. And anyone looking for household goods or clothing can come and browse and help themselves. August 23 – 25: Thursday and Friday, from 2 to 5, and Saturday, from 11 to 4, the doors will be open for people to drop off or pick up re-usable items. At 4 pm Saturday, the Freecycle Exchange will close and all remaining items will be donated to the Thrift Shop at 215 N Illinois.

The motivation for this exchange is to save items that are in decent shape from the landfill and to give everyone a chance to give something away for free. There are other ways to do this. Heartland Community Swap is on Facebook. Freecycle is an online organization that "matches people who have things they need to get rid of with people who can use them.. to keep usable items out of the landfill." There is a group specifically for Carbondale. An email from the moderator states, "By using what we already have on this earth, we reduce consumerism, manufacture fewer goods, and lessen the impact on the earth. Another benefit of using Freecycle.org is that it encourages us to get rid of junk that we no longer need and promote community involvement in the process."
