Analysis: Sales tax funded 21 percent of City of Carbondale budget in 2016

The City of Carbondale's local sales tax brought in $10,230,493 in 2016, according to Illinois State Comptroller revenue data. Carbondale, population 26,324, relied on its local sales tax to contribute 21 percent of total revenue that year.

Carbondale levies a 2.5 percent sales tax. The average of one suburbs in Jackson County is 2.5. The high is 2.5 percent; the low is 2.5 percent.

Carbondale Reporter analyzed the sales tax collections in one Jackson County suburbs and found they generated a total of $10,230,493 in tax revenue in 2016. That was the equivalent of 21% spent by local government.
