Rep. Paul Jacobs has announced the passing of House Bill 1341, aimed at creating a task force to explore future uses for the Tamms prison facility in southern Illinois. Once operational, the prison has been shuttered for ten years and now faces the pressing question of its future role in the community.
The core objective of the task force is to evaluate whether the existing buildings can be repurposed or if they should be demolished to pave the way for new developments that could revitalize the region's economy.
Addressing the bill's intentions, Rep. Jacobs stated, “We need to determine whether or not the existing buildings can be repurposed or should be demolish them and make way for new development to help with the economic growth for the region.” He further emphasized the need for proactive measures, remarking, “All that property is growing is rattle snakes and other things. We need to grow jobs and opportunity.”
