April marks National Child Abuse Prevention Month, with this year’s theme, "Powered by Hope, Strengthened by Prevention," emphasizing the role of community support in preventing child abuse prior to its occurrence. State Senator Terri Bryant notes the importance of strong communities in safeguarding children by providing access to resources such as counseling, mental health services, and family advocacy programs.

A range of awareness events is taking place across Illinois throughout April, including press conferences, pinwheel plantings, and art exhibitions showcasing the work of children in care. On April 4, residents are encouraged to participate in the initiative by wearing blue and sharing their support on social media using the hashtags #GreatChildhoods and #GoBlueIllinois.

In another event, Senator Terri Bryant attended a presentation by 4th graders at the Washington Attendance Center. The play centered on Abraham Lincoln's life and presidency. Impressed by the students' dedication, Senator Bryant expressed her admiration for their enthusiasm and hard work in portraying this historical figure.

The Illinois Senate has passed Senate Joint Resolution 12 (SJR 12), declaring 2026 as the Illinois Route 66 Centennial Year. This resolution highlights the state's role in the history of Route 66, including being the first to fully pave the highway and hosting its starting point. Senator Bryant stated, "Route 66 is more than just a road; it is a symbol of American freedom and exploration, and rightfully deserves recognition." The resolution now awaits consideration in the House.

The Illinois Treasurer’s Office is conducting the Cream of the Crop Photo Contest, inviting young photographers aged 8-18 to submit images representing Illinois agriculture. The contest is open for submissions until June 13, with entries accepted electronically through the official contest website. This competition features three age categories: 8-10, 11-14, and 15-18, with prizes up to $1,000 in Bright Start scholarships for the top three winners in each group.
