The Southern Illinois University softball team continued its strong start to conference play with two victories over Valparaiso on Saturday in Indiana. The Salukis, now 16-14 overall and 8-0 in conference play, secured an 18-3 win in the first game and a 6-3 victory in the second.

In the first game, SIU scored a season-high of 18 runs. They achieved five runs each in the first and second innings and seven more in the fifth inning, resulting in a run-rule victory. Kiana McDowell (2-4) earned her second win by pitching three innings, allowing six hits and three earned runs. McKenzie Newcomb also contributed with two innings pitched, surrendering one hit with no runs or walks.

Emily Williams had an outstanding performance for SIU, going 3-for-3 with two home runs and eight RBIs. Jackie Lis added to the scoreline by finishing 2-for-2 with four RBIs and three walks. Erin Lee led with four hits from five at-bats.

Valparaiso managed to add a solo home run early but couldn't keep up as Southern's top order powered through for more scores throughout the game.

In the second game of the day, Southern out-hit Valparaiso seven to four. Trailing 3-2 entering the fifth inning, SIU scored four times to secure a final score of 6-3. Newcomb (10-5) reached double figures in wins after pitching a complete game.

Lis contributed again by going 2-for-3 with two doubles while Carder finished similarly with multiple hits including a double that tied up crucial scores for SIU during their comeback.

The Salukis will next face Belmont in Nashville, Tennessee on Friday, March 28th at 5 p.m., continuing their road games this season.
