The Southern Illinois University softball team secured an 8-4 victory over Illinois State on Sunday, marking their sixth consecutive win and completing a series sweep. The Salukis now hold an 11-14 overall record, with a 3-0 mark in conference play.
Head coach Jen Sewell commented on the team's performance, stating, "I thought we had a good mix of righties and lefties striking the ball well. I still want us to be a little more aggressive early in the count, but when you come out with three wins, you can't over complain in the locker room."
Southern Illinois scored six of their eight runs during the second inning and added two more in the fourth. Both teams recorded nine hits and two errors each.
Pitcher McKenzie Newcomb contributed significantly by earning her third win of the season after pitching two innings in relief. She allowed just one hit while striking out five batters.
Emily Williams had another strong showing, going 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs. Emma Austin and Anna Carder also had notable performances with two hits each.
Coach Sewell noted, "We have enough offense to put a gap on people and make them feel like they're out of a game."
Freshman Emma Gipson started for SIU, holding Illinois State scoreless through two innings before being relieved by Kaytee Dahlstrom. Despite allowing some unearned runs, SIU maintained control throughout the game.
Looking ahead, Southern Illinois will host Missouri State for a midweek series at Charlotte West Stadium starting Tuesday, March 18.
