Southern Illinois University's men's swim and dive team began their championship season with notable achievements at the Men's Missouri Valley Conference Championships in Oxford, Ohio. On Wednesday night, they participated in two events, securing a gold and bronze medal while setting multiple records.
In the 200-yard medley relay, SIU's team clocked a time of 1:24.72, which is a new school record as well as a new MVC, MVC Championship, and pool record. The team members included Alex Cimera, Tiago Faleiros, Alex Santiago, and Donat Csuvarszki. They narrowly defeated Miami (OH) by 0.26 seconds to claim first place.
The second event of the evening was the 800-yard free relay. The Southern Illinois relay team consisted of Rodrigo Ramos Chávez, Henrique Pacheco Januario, Juraj Barcot, and Willem Huggins. They completed their swim in 6:28.58, establishing a new school record and earning third place on the podium.
After day one of competition, SIU is tied with Missouri State in the standings with 72 points each.
Day two of the championships will commence on Thursday at 10:30 a.m. EST with finals scheduled for 5 p.m. EST.
