State Representative Dave Severin has announced the donation of several backpacks filled with emergency supplies to the Amy Schulz Center in Mt. Vernon. This initiative is part of Severin's "Backpacks for Buddies" program, which has been running for several years to support children in emergency foster care.

Severin explained the origins of the program: “I first started this program after meeting with representatives of Caritas in the Marion area a few years ago when I represented Williamson County,” he said. He noted that many children removed from their homes by DCFS often lack personal possessions, sometimes resorting to using garbage bags for their belongings. “That broke my heart, and I thought there had to be a better way," Severin added.

The community has contributed significantly, with donations reaching hundreds. Severin expressed gratitude for the continued support: "I am glad to continue to provide backpacks to these children through my ‘Backpacks for Buddies’ program.”

Those interested in contributing can drop off backpacks or supplies at Severin’s offices in Mt. Vernon or Benton from Monday through Friday. The Benton office is located at 303 N. Main Street, Benton, IL 62812 (phone: 618-440-5090), while the Mt. Vernon office is at 2929 Broadway, Suite 3, Mt. Vernon, IL 62864 (phone: 618-472-8158).
