South Dakota State University secured a decisive 41-10 victory over Southern Illinois in Brookings, South Dakota. The Jackrabbits, ranked third nationally, accumulated 503 yards of total offense, primarily through their ground game which contributed 288 yards.
"Tip your cap to them — that's an outstanding team," commented Nick Hill, head coach of Southern Illinois. "It's the defending national champions and probably have their sights on winning another one. That's the level they play at consistently each week."
The first quarter saw a close contest with South Dakota State leading by just three points. However, the Jackrabbits surged ahead in the second quarter with four touchdowns, establishing a commanding 31-0 lead by halftime.
Southern Illinois struggled offensively, managing only 233 total yards and converting just one out of ten third-down attempts. "We weren't good enough to make it a game today," said Hill. "We didn't make it difficult on them and put them in tough situations."
The Salukis faced numerous injuries throughout the season and had uncertainties at quarterback entering this game. Freshman Jake Curry started despite limited practice due to a hamstring injury but was visibly hindered in his mobility.
"It was a game-time decision with him," explained Hill regarding Curry's participation. Michael Lindauer replaced Curry and completed 12-of-17 passes for 145 yards, including a notable 48-yard touchdown pass to Allen Middleton.
"Mike's out here competing and playing," stated Hill about Lindauer's performance. "He got in a little groove on a couple drives and it was good to see."
On defense, safety Ubayd Steed led Southern Illinois with 11 tackles—his fifth double-digit tackle effort in six games. The absence of starting linebackers Chris Presto and Shug Walker due to concussion protocol impacted SIU’s ability to contain SDSU’s running game.
In the final quarter, Southern Illinois rotated many underclassmen into play for experience without affecting their redshirt status. "That was probably the highlight — being able to rep a lot of true freshmen on those last few series," noted Hill.
Southern Illinois will conclude its season next Saturday against Murray State during Senior Day at home.
"We get 12 opportunities," remarked Hill regarding their upcoming match. "It's about putting together the best week and finishing — all the things you talk about in your program — we have an opportunity to do that Saturday."
