A Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request was submitted to the City Of Carterville Finance Department regarding sales tax records on October 25, 2024. The request was made by us at Carbondale Reporter, a media organization dedicated to providing comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs.
The specific records requested under the Illinois Freedom of Information Act, 5 ILCS 140, include sales tax collected from retailers from January 1, 2024, till the present date. We asked for these records preferably in an electronic format for easy analysis and reporting.
The detailed information we sought includes monthly comparisons of actual sales tax collected versus projected amounts. Additionally, we requested data on the number of active retail locations paying sales tax each month. Furthermore, we asked for the names of each retailer and their reported gross retail sales for each month.
As a media organization committed to holding public institutions accountable and providing transparency to the public, access to such public records is essential for us. We believe that our role in disseminating information makes us eligible for a fee waiver as a media professional.
We await a response from the City Of Carterville Finance Department and will continue our efforts to provide comprehensive news coverage on local governmental affairs.
