High temperatures are expected to persist across Illinois today. Authorities have provided several tips to ensure safety during extreme heat:

Residents are advised to stay out of the sun. If exposure is necessary, sunscreen with at least SPF 15 and a wide-brimmed hat should be worn. Seeking shade or staying under awnings is also recommended.

People should avoid overexertion and strenuous outdoor activities. Wearing lightweight, light-colored, loose-fitting clothes that cover as much skin as possible can help prevent sunburn.

It is crucial to consume plenty of non-alcoholic, non-caffeinated fluids, even if not feeling thirsty. Water, diluted juices, and electrolyte solutions are considered best. Carbonated drinks should be avoided.

Keeping lights in homes low or off, drawing shades, and avoiding the use of ovens can help manage indoor temperatures. Ensuring rooms are well-ventilated with air conditioners and fans is also important. For those without air conditioning or fans, keeping windows open may provide some relief; however, it is noted that fans alone will not prevent heat-related illnesses when temperatures reach the high 90s.

Utilizing cooling centers, public pools, and air-conditioned stores and malls during periods of extreme heat can reduce the risk of heat-related illness. Exposure to air conditioning for even a few hours daily significantly lowers this risk.
