Federal prosecutors have requested the court to deny efforts to separate the upcoming racketeering trials of former Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan and his co-defendant Michael McClain. Prosecutors argue that trying the men separately would allow each to blame the other. McClain's attorneys had filed a motion seeking to sever his case from Madigan’s, citing concerns that Madigan might point the finger at him during trial. Prosecutors countered that both defendants would benefit from separate trials, enabling them to shift blame onto an absent defendant.

Madigan faces charges including racketeering conspiracy, using interstate facilities in aid of bribery, wire fraud, and attempted extortion.
