Rep. Jacobs Marks First Day of Summer, Offers Tips on How to Beat the Heat

Jun 20, 2024

Today marks the first official day of summer. Rep. Jacobs has shared several precautions to help individuals stay safe from the summer heat.

"Stay out of the sun," advised Rep. Jacobs. "If you must be in the sun, wear sunscreen (at least SPF 15) and a wide-brimmed hat." She also recommended staying in the shade or under awnings as much as possible.

To avoid overexertion and strenuous outdoor activities, she suggested wearing lightweight, light-colored, loose-fitting clothes that cover as much skin as possible to prevent sunburn.

"Consume plenty of non-alcoholic, non-caffeinated fluids, even if you don’t feel thirsty," Rep. Jacobs stated. She highlighted that water, diluted juices, and electrolyte solutions are best while advising against carbonated drinks.

For those at home, she recommended keeping lights low or off, drawing shades closed, and avoiding using ovens to keep rooms cool. Ensuring proper ventilation with air conditioners and fans is crucial; however, she noted that fans will not prevent heat-related illness when temperatures reach the high 90s.

Finally, Rep. Jacobs encouraged taking advantage of cooling centers, public pools, and air-conditioned stores and malls during periods of extreme heat. "Exposure to air conditioning for even a few hours a day will reduce the risk for heat-related illness," she emphasized.
