Johnston City Community Unit School District 1 Board of Education met Jan. 25.

Here are the minutes provided by the board:

The Board of Education of the Johnston City Community Unit School District No. 1 met at a regular Board meeting held on January 25, 2024 with the Closed Session beginning at 6:50 p.m. and Regular Session beginning at 7:02 p.m. at the Unit Office, 1113 Grand Avenue, Johnston City, IL. President Chris Cullum called the meeting to order and asked the clerk for the attendance roll call.

ROLL CALL

Present: Chad Barras, Jimmy Dean, John Etherton, Patti Martin, Randy McIntosh, John Van, and Chris Cullum

Absent: None

Motion made by John Etherton and seconded by John Van to approve the consent agenda consisting of the following:

A. Approval of Regular and Closed Session Minutes of the 12/19/23 Regular Meeting and the Regular and Closed Session Minutes of the 1/10/24 Special Meeting

B. Approve Destruction of Closed Session tapes listed below in Accordance with 5 ILCS 120/2.6c 7/29/21, 8/19/21, 9/20/21, 10/21/21, 11/16/21, and 12/16/21

C. Approval of Treasurer’s Report

Voting Aye: Barras, Dean, Etherton, Martin, McIntosh, Van, and Cullum

Motion Carried.

Motion made by Chad Barras and seconded by Randy McIntosh to approve the bills for payment.

Voting Aye: Barras, Etherton, Martin, McIntosh, Van, and Cullum

Abstaining: Dean

Motion Carried.

Mr. John Helton, IASB Search Consultant, presented information to the Board regarding the process and timelines for the superintendent search.

Steve Sims, Architechniques Ltd., presented an update regarding the Jefferson School Project Phase 3 and 4 plans. The civil engineers and structural engineers are working on the designs of the Jefferson School Project. The Jefferson School Project is on schedule to bid in March.

Motion made by John Etherton and seconded by John Van to set the High School Graduation on Friday, May 17, 2024 and to set the 8th Grade Promotion for Tuesday, May 21, 2024.

Motion Carried.

Motion made by Randy McIntosh and seconded by Patti Martin to approve the 2024-2025 School Calendar.

Voting Aye: Barras, Dean, Etherton, Martin, McIntosh, Van, and Cullum

Motion Carried.

The awarding of the Transportation bid was tabled.

The Transportation Committee will meet on February 12, 2024 at 5:00 pm.

Motion made by Chad Barras and seconded by Randy McIntosh to authorize the solicitation of Food Service bids.

Voting Aye: Barras, Dean, Etherton, Martin, McIntosh, Van, and Cullum

Motion Carried.

Motion made by Randy McIntosh and seconded by Jimmy Dean to accept the bid from David Kennedy in the amount of $300.00 for the two (2) Baird HVAC units at Jefferson School.

Voting Aye: Barras, Dean, Etherton, Martin, McIntosh, Van, and Cullum

Motion Carried.

Motion made by Chad Barras and seconded by John Etherton to declare the three (3) compartment sink at Washington Middle School, the locker room lockers at the High School, and the turf from the football field as surplus property.

Voting Aye: Barras, Dean, Etherton, Martin, McIntosh, Van, and Cullum

Motion Carried.

Motion made by Jimmy Dean and seconded by Randy McIntosh to approve the out of state trip for the HS CNA Students to Sikeston, MO on February 9, 2024, the overnight trip for the Washington Middle School Dance to IDTA State Competition in Springfield, IL on February 9, 2024 – February 11, 2024, the overnight trip for the High School Scholar Bowl to the Scholar Bowl Masonic State Competition in Bloomington, IL March 1, 2024 – March 2, 2024 (pending qualification), the overnight trip for the High School Scholar Bowl to the Scholastic Bowl State Competition in Bloomington, IL March 15, 2024 – March 16, 2024 (pending qualification), the overnight trip for the HS Math Team to the ICTM State Competition in Normal, IL April 4, 2024 – April 5, 2024 (pending qualification), and the out of state trip for the HS Business Club to the City Museum in St. Louis, MO on April 5, 2024.

Voting Aye: Barras, Dean, Etherton, Martin, McIntosh, Van, and Cullum

Motion Carried.

Motion made by Jimmy Dean and seconded by John Etherton to accept the resignations of Morgen Calcaterra as a District Social Work Intern and Casey Buckman as the Assistant Middle School Girls’ Basketball Coach and as the 5th and 6th Grade Girls’ Basketball Coach, to employ Jamie Chiaventone as High School Guidance Counselor and Cassie Stonebraker as a Lincoln School Paraprofessional (180 day position), and to post the Assistant Superintendent for 2024-2025 with the planned transition to District Superintendent in 2025-2026, the Assistant Middle School Girls’ Basketball Coach and the 5th and 6th Grade Girls’ Basketball Coach positions.

Voting Aye: Barras, Dean, Etherton, Martin, McIntosh, Van, and Cullum

Motion Carried.

Mrs. Clark informed the Board that the lights have been installed at the Bus Garage.

The concrete for the greenhouse will be poured at the end of February, weather permitting.

Mrs. Clark informed the Board that Washington Middle School receive an additional $89,000.00 for their School Improvement Grant.

Ashley Huey will be presenting at the next IASB Region Meeting “Assessing and Addressing Student Mental Health Needs” Tuesday, March 12 at 6:30 at Harrisburg High School.

Henry Chrostoski, a Johnston City High School student in the Construction Craft Preparation Program (CCPP), will present at the CCPP recruitment program at the High School.

The High School Wrestling Team hosted the Black Diamond Conference meet.

The High School CNA pinning will be held on January 31, 2024.

Motion made by Randy McIntosh and seconded by Jimmy Dean to adjourn the meeting at 8:03 p.m.
