Herrin City Library Board of Trustees met Dec. 6.

Here are the minutes provided by the board:

Present: Calcaterra, Caringer, Guebert, Hickman, Jones, Priest, Sarver, Starnes

Also Present: Director Susan Mullen

Absent: Frost

The meeting was called to order at 6:29 PM by President Kathleen Jones.

Visitor(s): Rebecca Maloney

Correspondence: None

Secretary’s Report: Starnes moved to approve the minutes from November 8, 2022. Guebert seconded. Motion carried unanimously.

Treasurer’s Report:

A. Bills to be Paid: Guebert moved to approve the payment of $4,177.82 for expenses incurred from November 9-30 and $2,073.24 for expenses incurred from December 1-6. Calcaterra Seconded. Motion carried unanimously.

B. City Budget Report: Last month’s report showed that 58% of the budget has been spent, with 58% of the fiscal year completed, leaving a checking account balance of $220,741.63. Caringer moved to approve the report. Priest seconded.

Motion carried unanimously.

C. Financial Balance Statement: Starnes moved to approve the Library balance report from the previous month. Calcaterra seconded. Motion carried unanimously.

Librarian’s Report:

Circulation for November 2022 was 11% greater than Novemberr 2021. The Library currently has 5,266 registered borrowers and 41,210 volumes in its collection. 1,416 patrons used the Online Public Access Catalog (OPAC) from home in November. Website visits in November totaled 1,770 page views. Director Mullen attended the IHLS Director’s Chat sessions via Adobe Connect on November 3 and 10, as well as Member Day on November 17. The Library hosted the first Monthly Movie Matinee since before the COVID-19 pandemic with Top Gun: Maverick. The Library honored military veterans during the month of November, and received positive feedback regarding Lisa Carnaghi’s display and the Library’s offering of free services to veterans all month. Director Mullen extends a special thank you to Mr. James Starnes for serving as a Library Trustee for twelve years, noting that “he has been a valuable and indispensable member or our Board.”

Children’s Librarian’s Report:

The Story Hour theme for November 3 was “Harvest Time!” Kayla O’Saile read One More Acorn, by Don Freeman and Sophie’s Squash by Pat Zietlow Miller. November 17 was Family Reading Night, and this year it was titled “Read Beyond the Beaten Path!”

Miss O’Saile read Curious George Goes Camping by H. A. Rey and Camp Tiger by Susan Choi. Following the reading, attendees made crafts and played games, winning prizes from the book cart. On November 18, Miss O’Saile read 10 Fat Turkeys by Tony Johnston and Thanksgiving is Here by Diana Goode to Pre-K students who took a field trip from Northside School. Beyond the reading, children also learned how to discover books themselves in the children’s section of the Herrin City Library. 28 children and 15 adults attended, and 11 new library cards were issued that day!

Committee Reports:

• Friends Liaison (Starnes):

o The last November book sale earned $635.

• History Room (Hickman): No report

• Building and Grounds (Priest, Jones): No report

• Community Enrichment (Sarver): No report

• Library Development and Technology (Caringer): No report

• Special Gifts Committee (Guebert, Frost): No report

Old Business:

• As part of the PerCapita Grant requirements, the BoT reviewed and discussed Serving Our Public 4.0, Chapters 11-12 plus Appendices.

New Business:

• The BoT reviewed the proposed 2023 Holiday Schedule. Guebert moved to approve the schedule as written. Sarver seconded. The motion carried unanimously.

• The BoT also reviewed the Illinois Libraries Presents agreement. Calcaterra moved to approve the agreement as written. Caringer seconded. The motion carried unanimously.

Adjournment: Starnes moved to adjourn at 6:56 PM. A special reception in honor of Mr. Starnes was held following the BoT meeting.
