State Representative Dave Severin of Benton has voiced his opposition to the recent $1 billion increase in taxes, fund sweeps, and fees used to support Illinois' $55.2 billion fiscal year 2026 budget. This vote occurred on the final day of the spring 2025 legislative session.

Severin criticized the Democratic Party's approach, stating, “It’s another year, and another huge tax increase to pay for a ton of pork projects and pay raises for politicians.” He referenced Governor Pritzker's earlier Budget Address where he suggested that spending increases should be accompanied by cuts. Severin claimed this advice was ignored by Democrats who opted instead to raise taxes and fees.

Since Governor Pritzker took office in 2019, state expenditures have reportedly increased from $40.3 billion to $55.2 billion—a $15 billion rise. Severin expressed concerns over increased spending, allocations for Democratic districts' projects, and politician pay raises within the FY26 budget.

Additionally, Severin criticized the legislative process behind the budget's passage. “The process absolutely stinks to high heaven,” he remarked. He accused Democrats of non-transparent practices by negotiating privately and presenting a lengthy bill at the last moment before passing it during late-night hours.

Severin urged citizens to hold Democrats accountable for what he termed "unethical" budgetary actions that burden taxpayers with significant financial commitments toward questionable policies.
