In a Jan. 10 Facebook post, Rep. Dave Severin (R-Mount Vernon) wrote about the assault weapons ban being signed into law.
“Democrats in Illinois have taken their quest to pass unconstitutional gun control legislation to the next level tonight, as Governor (J.B.) Pritzker has signed a bill that will make law-abiding citizens into felons for failing to comply with government managed gun registry,” he wrote on Facebook.
Pritzker signed House Bill 5471 on Jan. 10, and it went into effect immediately. Assault weapons, high capacity magazines and rapid fire devices are banned by the new law.
Also called the "Protect Illinois Community Act," the amended House Bill 5471 clarifies what high capacity magazines are banned. Magazines with more than 10 rounds are banned for long guns, and magazines with more than 15 rounds are banned for handguns.
Severin's statement continued: “The Illinois State Rifle Association has pledged to sue the State of Illinois for passing this bill to stop it from being implemented. I support their planned court challenge and will continue to advocate for the Second Amendment Rights of the people of the State of Illinois and the United States of America.”
Severin was first elected to the Illinois House in 2017. His legislative experience includes serving on the Judiciary - Criminal, and Mental Health & Addiction committees. Severin resides in Benton.
