In a July 26 Facebook post, Rep. Patrick Windhorst (R-Harrisburg) reminded constituents of the upcoming sales tax reduction on school supplies.
“The state sales tax on school supplies will be reduced beginning August 5 in Illinois,” Windhorst posted. He posted a link to a WGN story about the tax reduction.
The items recognized by the state as school supplies include: binders, book bags, calculators, composition books, crayons, loose leaf ruled notebook paper, copy paper, pencils and pens and other items.
The tax holiday does not cover art supplies, reference books, and flash drives among other things.
Only qualifying clothing and footwear with a retail selling price of less than $125 can get the discounted tax.
The below items are considered “clothing” by the state: Household and shop aprons, athletic supporters, bathing suits and caps, belts and suspenders, boots, coats and jackets.
The tax break does not include sport or recreational equipment, protective equipment or clothing accessories, nor barrettes, hair bows, and hair nets.
Windhorst was first elected to the Illinois House in 2018. His legislative experience includes serving on the Restorative Justice Committee and Judiciary - Criminal committee.
