Earlier this year, Ameren and ComEd announced significant increases in summer electricity rates. These hikes are attributed to energy grid capacity auctions and ongoing strains on Illinois' power supply. Senate Republicans have attributed the rate hikes and supply issues to what they describe as failed policies by Democrat lawmakers, which they claim have led to the closure of reliable power plants and blocked new construction.
