Rep. Patrick Windhorst took to Facebook to celebrate Polish-American nobleman Casimir Pulaski, who played a role during the American Revolution.
Windhorst formed the American cavalry.
“We celebrate the achievements of Casimir Pulaski, a Polish nobleman who became a brigadier general in the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War,” he wrote on Facebook.
The Polish Museum of America is home to more information about Pulaski.
The Polish Museum of America hosted an event Monday (March 7) to honor Pulaski.
“He came here as a volunteer,” James Robaczewski, chairman of the Polish Museum of America, said. “He fought with the American colonists against British oppression and these are things we need to remember about him going forward. In protecting the freedoms that we hold dear to our heart as we as hold in to the people of other countries.”
According to the Washington Library at George Washington’s Mount Vernon, Pulaski was born in Poland in 1745, the son of a founder of the Confederation of Bar. When Pulaski was 26, he attempted to kidnap the Polish king and was falsely accused of an attempted assassination. He had to leave Poland the next year and went to France. In 1776, he left for the United States, where he first fought in the Battle of Brandywine on Sept. 11, 1777.
Schools in Springfield, the Mt. Pulaski school district and the Capital Area Career Center were closed to honor Pulaski, according to the State Journal Register.
