Computer science professor Bo Li is among 118 recipients of the 2022 Sloan Research Fellowships from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. According to the foundation, the awards “honor extraordinary U.S. and Canadian researchers whose creativity, innovation and research accomplishments make them stand out as the next generation of leaders.” Awardees receive a two-year $75,000 fellowship to further their research.

Li’s research focuses on trustworthy machine learning, information theory, game theory, artificial intelligence, computer security and privacy. She joined the Illinois computer science faculty in 2018 and also is affiliated with electrical and computer engineering.

“The Sloan Fellowship is one of most prestigious awards available to early-career scientists, and we are thrilled that Professor Li’s distinguished reputation is being recognized,” said Andreas Cangellaris, the vice chancellor for academic affairs and provost at Illinois. “We are extremely proud of her accomplishments, and we are confident that she will continue to grow as an outstanding researcher and leader in the department of computer science.”

In 2020, Li was included on the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Review of 35 Technology Innovators Under 35 for making artificial intelligence safer by devising adversarial attacks that fool AI. Other recent honors include the National Science Foundation CAREER Award in 2021, Intel’s 2020 Rising Star Faculty Award, the 2019 and 2020 Q4 Amazon Web Services Machine Learning Research Awards and the 2021 Facebook Research Award.

“Today’s Sloan Research Fellows represent the scientific leaders of tomorrow,” said Adam F. Falk, the president of the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. “As formidable young scholars, they are already shaping the research agenda within their respective fields – and their trailblazing won’t end here.”
