Marion Veterans Affairs Medical Center recently issued the following announcement.
Touch of Nature is offering the opportunity to experience the art of making maple syrup. Participants will learn about the history of maple sugaring in North America, the science behind the production, and experience first-hand the actual process of making maple syrup.
Throughout the day, students will learn how to identify and select the correct tree, how to “tap” a sugar maple, how to collect and store sap, and how to convert sap into syrup using a boil down method.
Topics covered may include: tree physiology, photosynthesis, forest ecology, history, and how climate change is affecting maple trees.
This is a "hands-on" experience. Please dress for the weather and be prepared to be outside for this program.
