AFRICAN AMERICAN MUSEUM OF SOUTHERN ILLINOIS: Finding Your Morning Routine

African American Museum of Southern Illinois recently issues the following announcement.

Do you wake up feeling overwhelmed, stressed, or anxious? Do your mornings just feel chaotic and frustrating? Well, you’re not alone! Especially recently with the kids and family home 24/7, many people have said they’ve been starting their days feeling “behind” or just feeling “chaotic and frustrated” in general.

Starting your day in the same (or a similar) way can truly help you alleviate these negative feelings! It helps me to feel in control of my day, which turns to feeling in control of my week, month, and year. It might sound cheesy to you now, but I challenge you to develop a morning routine (and stick with it for at least a couple weeks!) and see how it benefits your productivity, mindset, and performance – both in your work-life and home-life.

Here’s how I start MY day:

5:00 - Wake up! Put on my robe & slippers and head downstairs

5:15 – Turn on the coffee maker, drink some water, and take my daily vitamins

5:20 – Take my first sip of coffee (yay!), head to my office and grab my journal. I like to start my day with a positive journal prompt, writing down my goals for the day, and 3 things I’m grateful for.

5:45 – Head back upstairs to change into my workout clothes!

6:00 – Head to the basement where I have a “mini-gym” setup during this time. My workout time is limited, so it’s important that I am always in there and getting started by 6:00!

7:00 – Go back upstairs and start breakfast for the kids. My go-tos are usually scrambled eggs and toast, but lately they’ve been super picky, so they’ve been having cereal, which makes things even easier for me! With my extra time, I’ve been making myself a smoothie, which gives me natural energy to start my day!

7:15 – Run upstairs to shower while the kids eat their breakfast.

7:30 – Back downstairs to help the kiddos start their “school” day. We’ve been doing worksheets and journaling to start their day and that seems to help get them in the “school” mindset right away in the mornings.

7:40 – I head back upstairs to throw on just a tiny bit of makeup and dry my hair. It’s still important to me to feel good (and those Zoom cameras don’t help my makeup-less face very much during work meetings!) even though I’m home 24/7 these days!

7:45 – Help the kids wrap up their first “assignment” of the day and get setup in my office for my own work day. I have also created little work stations for the kids in my home office, which is distracting but also super helpful to have us all together to complete our “work” for the day!

---

How do you start your day? It’s totally ok if our mornings look different! Be aware that it might take a couple tries to find what works with you/your family’s schedule – that’s 100% normal! Just find what works for YOU and helps you get your day started off on a positive note.
