Carbondale Non-Bargaining Unit Employees Personnel Board recently issues the following announcement.
Due to uncertainty amid the COVID-19 pandemic, the City of Carbondale has decided to cancel this year’s annual fireworks display on the Southern Illinois University campus.
This longtime Fourth of July tradition draws large crowds, which are not allowed under the Governor’s stay-at-home order or the Restore Illinois Plan.
We are saddened to have to cancel the event but feel it is in the best interest of our community’s health.

“Carbondale prides itself on providing its visitors, students, businesses and residents with a unique mix of edge and ease. It’s a cultural town, yet free of pretense, embracing the great outdoors as readily as urban sophistication. Here, we are open to new ideas, experiences and cultures, so you are encouraged to both express yourself and be yourself, in all ways. That’s Carbondale…All Ways Open… for family, fun, business, new ideas and a bright tomorrow.”
