Illinois State Senate District 59 issued the following announcement on Oct. 11.
With farmers headed back to the fields, Sen. Fowler spent time learning more about Southern Illinois’ agriculture by partnering with the Williamson County Farm Bureau to tour two locally-owned farms. Earlier in the week, Sen. Fowler visited Tom Miller’s farm and Gary Bundren’s Farm to check out their operations and learn more about their work in the industry.
Sen. Fowler also hosted his third-annual Youth Advisory Council this week, bringing together dozens of high school students from across the 59th Senate District for a unique experience in public policy and state government.
Students from 15 Southern Illinois high schools attended the all-day event held at John A. Logan College in Carterville to learn more about the government process and hear from local leaders in their community. In the afternoon, students came together in small groups to discuss and debate various policy issue, working together to outline mock legislation changes.
The students then presented their proposals to the council for a vote. In the spring, the members of Fowler’s Youth Advisory Council will visit the state Capitol during the legislative session, to conduct a mock committee hearing on the chosen proposal.
Sen. Fowler finished out the week by touring Delta Companies, a highway and site development contractor specializing in asphalt paving and road construction materials. The Southern Illinois-based business works in Missouri, Arkansas and Illinois, employing anywhere between 250 to 400 employees, according to their site. Sen. Fowler visited the Southern Illinois Stone Quarry based in Goreville on October 9.
With Veterans Day approaching, Sen. Fowler is asking constituents to submit a photo and tribute to a loved one who has served in the United States Armed Forces to be displayed on the Veterans Day “Wall of Honor” in the Illinois State Capitol Nov. 4-15.

STATE NEWS:
Fire Prevention Week: October 6-12
The theme for Fire Prevention Week this year is Not Every Hero Wears A Cape. The Office of the State Fire Marshal is encouraging residents to learn, prepare, and practice for emergencies. Local firefighters will be visiting schools during the week to talk to students about the importance of fire safety and what they can do to help.
Families are encouraged to have an escape plan for their homes that includes multiple exits and paths to safety. According to the Illinois Fire Marshal, there were more than 15,500 residential fires last year in Illinois. To help families with an escape plan, the National Fire Protection Association recommends the following tips:
Draw a map of your home that clearly identifies pathways to two exits.
Practice your home fire drill twice a year, once at night and once during the day, with everyone in the family.
Teach children how to escape on their own in case you can’t help them.
Clearly mark your home so fire departments and first responders can find it easily.
Close doors behind you as you leave to slow the spread of smoke and fire.
Once you get outside, stay outside. Never go back inside a burning building.

A number of residents have reported to the ISP that they have received a call with a voice indicating the person’s grandson has been arrested or is in trouble. Citizens should be aware of this scam, and remember that the Illinois State Police does not ask for personal information and will never call to solicit money on behalf of the Department or ask you to send money for any reason. Citizens are advised to hang up immediately and cautioned to not provide any personal information.
The Illinois State Police encourages those that believe they have been the victim of this phone scam to call them at 217-782-7980, or report information on this scam or different types of phone scams to the Illinois Attorney General’s office.
