Herrin Community Unit School District 4 students suspended 199 times in a single school year

Herrin Community Unit School District 4 reported 199 suspensions for 2016-17, according to the latest student discipline report by the Illinois State Board of Education.

According to the report, the district expelled or suspended 199 students during the year. That equates to 7.9 percent of the 2,514 students enrolled.

Of the 199 out-of-school suspensions, 165 were given to boys and 34 were given to girls, including 131 elementary or middle schoolers and 68 high schoolers.

The district reported that most out-of-school suspensions were given for unspecified reasons. The category includes 105 incidents. There were 79 incidents of violence without physical injury. For 89 incidents, students were suspended for 3-5 days.
