Carbondale Chamber of Commerce recently issued the following announcement.
It’s the first week of classes at SIU and before everyone gets too serious about studying, The Varsity presents “National Lampoon’s Animal House” on Friday, Aug. 24.
The film stars John Belushi as “Bluto,” the beer guzzling seventh-year senior. Local legend has it that Belushi bought the famous “College” T-shirt at a local Carbondale print shop while visiting his brother Jim Belushi, who graduated from SIUC in 1978. In fact, a house called the Animal House at 20 W. Hospital Drive in Carbondale allegedly inspired the film.
“Animal House” revolves around the dabaucherous brothers of the Delta Tau fraternity, including Bluto, Otter, Boon, Flounder, Pinto and D-Day. Fed up with the rowdy frat, Dean Wormer places them on “Double Secret Probation" and assigns upstanding Omega Theta Pi House president (James Daughton) the task of getting their charter revoked.
There is only one way to fight back: Toga! Toga! Toga!
The Varsity will show “National Lampoon’s Animal House” at 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 24. Tickets are $7 or $5 for students. They are available in advance at www.thevarsitycenter.org. Tickets also will be available at the venue on the night of the show when doors and the bar open at 6:30 p.m. The Varsity Bar features beer, wine, select cocktails, non-alcoholic beverages, snacks and popcorn.
“National Lampoon’s Animal House” is rated R.
