CARBONDALE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE: The Varsity screening “Won’t You Be My Neighbor?” twice on Sept. 9

Carbondal

Carbondale Chamber of Commerce recently issued the following announcement.

The Varsity is thrilled to be able to offer two screenings of this year’s highest-grossing and critically acclaimed documentary “Won’t You Be My Neighbor?”

“Won't You Be My Neighbor?” takes an intimate look at America's favorite neighbor: Mister (Fred) Rogers. Viewers of the long-running, popular PBS show, “Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood,” almost feel as if they know him personally; but this documentary “takes us beyond the zip-up cardigans and the land of make-believe, and into the heart of a creative genius who inspired generations of children with compassion and limitless imagination.”

The film was directed by American documentarian Morgan Neville, and the trailer for the movie debuted on what would have been Rogers 90th birthday on March 20. It premiered at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival and was released in the United States on June 8. It received acclaim from critics and audiences and has grossed $22 million, making it the highest-grossing biographical documentary of all time.

Odie Henderson write on rogerebert.com: “Mr. Rogers made you feel like someone gave a damn about you. He said you were special. He did not promise you success or glory. He just told you that, no matter what you looked like, how able you were or how much money you had, that you had value.”

This movie is rated PG-13 for some thematic elements and language.

The Varsity will screen “Won’t You Be My Neighbor?” at 2 and 5 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 9. Tickets are $10 and are available in advance at www.thevarsitycenter.eventbrite.com. They also will be available at the doors when they open at 1:30 and 4:30.

The Varsity Bar will open when doors do, offering adult and other beverages, snacks and more.

The Varsity is downtown Carbondale at 418 S. Illinois Ave. To keep up with all events at The Varsity, go to www.facebook.com/varsitycenter.
