Carbondale Chamber of Commerce recently issued the following announcement.

Carbondale Community Arts is pleased to present the exhibit Fabrications by the Fiber5, local artists who work in fibers and textiles. The exhibit will be presented at Artspace 304 and the Corridor Gallery in the Carbondale Civic Center from September 5 - September 28. The members of the Fiber5 include Sherrie Grob and Susan Swisher of Murphysboro, and Virginia Gregory, Robin Haller, and Sandra Werlich of Carbondale.

As a group, the Fiber5 have been making fiber art since 1995. After working in traditional quilting groups, members realized a common interest in more contemporary form of fiber art. Since the group formed they have exhibited in several local and regional group exhibits. As individuals, each have shown their work in museums, galleries, shows, and publications, nationally and internationally, including quilt and multi-media exhibits. As members of the Illinois Artisans Gallery the group exhibited and sold their work at the Whittington showroom.

For the exhibit at Artspace 304 and Corridor Gallery, the Fiber5 produced five new pieces, each 18 by 24 inches, with green as the predominant color. Also in both exhibits are older works, most of which have not been previously displayed in the area. The group states ” In our quilts, we have tried to meet the challenge of working in textiles as painters do in oils and watercolor. Our roots in traditional quiltmaking are not forgotten, and often surface in unexpected ways, either in design or technique, but in all our work, self-expression in contemporary art is our goal.”
