Carbondale Chamber of Commerce recently issued the following announcement.
The Varsity announces its film line-up for Friday Flicks through September, offering a series of beloved and nostalgic comedies and dramas. Highlights include the 50th Anniversary Celebration of the Beatles’ movie “Yellow Submarine,” “Monty Python and the Holy Grail,” the Marx Brothers’ classic “The Cocoanuts” and “The Princess Bride.”
“We are so happy to offer this truly exceptional collection of films which we believe will be whole lot of fun and bring people to downtown Carbondale on Friday night,” explains Billy Robbins, the President of The Varsity Center Board of Directors.
The Varsity started showing films every Friday this summer and movie goers have embraced the concept.
“We took a risk on films we thought people wanted to see, and audiences have shown up. We are always looking for ways to expand our offerings,” added Cara Recine, the Varsity’s Executive Director.
“We try to make our films relevant. We are showing “Moonstruck” on a full moon. We are showing “Animal House” to welcome students back to Carbondale and “Norma Rae” for Labor Day weekend,” said Robbins.
The Varsity is a multipurpose facility featuring cinema, live theater, musical acts and a gallery space. The Varsity Bar is open for every show, and audiences can enjoy their drinks and snacks while they watch the film.
All films are on Friday and start at 7 p.m. Doors and the bar open at 6:30 p.m. Tickets can be purchased on Eventbrite through The Varsity website atwww.thevarsitycenter.org. Early purchase of tickets is encouraged as films often sell out. Tickets are $7 for general admission and $5 for students.
