Carbondale Chamber of Commerce recently issued the following announcement.

Members of The Jewels with Union County Sal are (from left) Jimmy Beers, Mike Aldefer, Sal (Susan Addington) and Kevin Ohlau. The set list includes songs recorded by Billie Holiday, Etta James, Nina Simone and Dinah Washington. Guitarist Joe Palermo will make a special appearance.

It will be a fantastic combination of music when The Jewels, vocalist Union County Sal and guitarist Joe Palermo take the Balcony Stage at The Varsity on Aug. 18.

Saxophonist Kevin Ohlau founded The Jewels, a jazz trio originating in Carbondale, in 2010. The Jewels perform as many as 30 of Ohlau’s original compositions and have played regionally and in Chicago. Ohlau is producing the Aug. 18 show.

The Saturday night performance will feature Union County Sal (Susan Addington of Makanda) on vocals. The band has put together a set list of songs recorded by notable artists such as Billie Holiday, Etta James, Nina Simone, Dinah Washington and more.

“We’ve been working hard on these songs and have a killer band ready to back her up,” Ohlau said.

Appearing as a special guest at the show is Joe Palermo, a classically trained guitarist from Southern Illinois. He is currently performing with The Squadfathers and The Downstate Music Company

The show begins at 7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 18. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased in advance at www.thevarsitycenter.org and at the door at 6:30 on the night of the show. That’s also when the Varsity Bar opens for purchase of wine, beer, select cocktails, soda and other nonalcoholic beverages, as well as snacks.

The Varsity is downtown Carbondale at 418 S. Illinois Ave. To keep up with events and more, go to www.facebook.com/varsitycenter.
