Ava VFD responds to 12 fires in 2017

Ava Volunteer Fire Department responded to 12 calls in 2017 - 14.3 percent less than the previous year, according to data from the National Fire Incident Reporting System.

The calls in Ava included 12 fires - three structure fires, two vehicle fires and seven other fires.

In all, the department saw $51,100 in fire loss - or about $4,258 per fire.

The Savanna Firefighters Pension Fund, which has two active employees and four retired or inactive employees, was $100,646 in debt as of April 2016, according to the fund's mandated filings with the Illinois Department of Insurance. That amounts to $11,183 for every fire in 2016.
