CARBONDALE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE: KCB Awards Bright Spot for Revitalized Home

J

Carbondale Chamber of Commerce recently issued the following announcement.

Jamison Pound heard that Carbondale wanted to restore old neighborhoods and bought the hundred-year old house at 313 West Sycamore, hoping to be surrounded by single family homes. The houses around him continue to be rentals, but he threw heart and soul into renovating his, with dramatic effect. Those efforts are recognized with a Bright Spot Award from Keep Carbondale Beautiful.

Pound, who owns Jamison's Chimney Service, jacked up the house to start with a new foundation. A porch now circles the house, looking out over a raised bed filled with yellow lilies. That made it a Bright Spot, but there was more. Pound re-did all the wiring and plumbing, poured concrete, laid out paving stones in front, built a deck, and dug gardens for vegetables as well as flowers.

The stones that had supported the house now decorate the back yard. His cellar digging turned up some interesting items: it was the cannonball that got him to look into the history of the house. Built in 1913, the house was added onto in the 1930s. In the '70s the mud basement got a concrete floor and an oil furnace (Pound opted for a wood-burner). It looks like he is only the third owner. His favorite item, that remains from the original home, is a bookshelf that hides a staircase leading to an attic, now a bonus room.

The KCB Board selects businesses or residences to receive the Bright Spot Award for enhancing the beauty of our community by means of revitalization of property, new construction, plantings and beautification, upkeep and maintenance, or rehabilitation.

If you would like to nominate a business or residence to receive the Award, please call the Keep Carbondale Beautiful office at 525-5525 or email BrightSpotAward@gmail.com. Archives of some past Bright Spot Award winners may be found at keepcb.org.
