Johnston City Community Unit School District 1 Board met March 19.

The Board of Education of the Johnston City Community Unit School District No. 1 met at a
regular Board meeting held on March 19, 2018 with Closed Session beginning at 6:30 p.m. and
the regular meeting beginning at 7:08 p.m. at the Unit Office, 200 E. 12th Street, Johnston City,
IL. President Chris Cullum called the meeting to order and asked the clerk for the attendance
roll call.
Roll Call
Present: Chad Barras, Randy Brymer, John Etherton, Patti Martin, Greg Smiley,
Keven Stroud, and Chris Cullum
Absent: None
Motion made by Randy Brymer and seconded by Keven Stroud to approve the consent agenda
consisting of the following:
A. Approval of the Regular and Closed Session minutes for the February 19, 2018
regular meeting;
B. Approval of the Treasurer’s Report;
C. Approval of the Bills for Payment;
D. Approval of IHSA 2018-2019 Membership
Voting Aye: Barras, Brymer, Etherton, Martin, Smiley, Stroud, and Cullum
Motion Carried.
Motion made by Greg Smiley and seconded by Chad Barras to approve the 2018-2019 Official
School Calendar as presented.

The Board recognized the JCHS Illinois State Scholars Shellby Brymer, Jackson Fowler,
Brittney Gibbens, Gage McPhail, Ethan Murrah, Sara Roman, Barilynn Shelby, and Cheyenne
Smith.
Motion made by Randy Brymer and seconded by Greg Smiley to approve the Board
Committees as presented.

Motion Carried.
Motion made by Keven Stroud and seconded by Randy Brymer to set Friday, May 18, 2018 as
the date for High School Commencement and Tuesday, May 22, 2018 as the date for Eighth
Grade Promotional Activities.

Motion Carried.
Motion made by Chad Barras and seconded by Patti Martin to amend the 2017-2018 Calendar
for the use of four (4) emergency days with the last day of student attendance being May 25, 2018
and the last day for teachers being May 29, 2018.

The first reading of the PRESS Policy Update was held.
Patti Kirkpatrick, Director of Finance and Accounting, presented proposals from Banterra Bank
(formerly First Bank), Legence Bank, and Southern Illinois Bank to the Board.
Motion made by Keven Stroud and seconded by Randy Brymer to accept the bank proposal
from Banterra Bank (formerly First Bank) for the handling and investing of the School
District’s monies.

Motion made by Greg Smiley and seconded by Keven Stroud to approve summer drivers’
education and to post the position.

Motion made by Greg Smiley and seconded by Keven Stroud to engage Cindy Bobell to
conduct the 2017-2018 audit.

Motion made by Chad Barras and seconded by Keven Stroud to approve the out of state trip
request for 6th grade band students to the Carson Center in Paducah, KY to see the
Paducah Symphony Orchestra on April 13, 2018 and the overnight trip request of the High
School Math team to the ICTM State Competition on May 4 – 5, 2018.

Motion made by Randy Brymer and seconded by Greg Smiley to accept the certified staff evaluations
as presented.

Motion made by Keven Stroud and seconded by Randy Brymer to approve Daniel Farmer as a
Volunteer Assistant High School Boys’ Track Coach upon passing background checks and
meeting requirements in IHSA by-law 2.070 Qualifications of Coaches and Bill Matyi as a
Volunteer Assistant High School Boys’ Baseball Coach upon passing background checks
and meeting requirements in IHSA by-law 2.070 Qualifications of Coaches.

Motion made by Keven Stroud and seconded by Randy Brymer to post a Kindergarten teaching
position and an Art teaching position.
Mrs. Clark informed the Board that the High School Scholar Bowl team made it to the “Elite 8” at the
IHSA State Scholar Bowl competition and that the High School WYSE team has qualified for the State
competition.
Motion made by Randy Brymer and seconded by Keven Stroud to adjourn the meeting at 7:38 p.m.
