Marion FD responds to 148 fires in 2016

Marion Fire Department responded to 335 calls in 2016, according to data from the National Fire Incident Reporting System obtained by the SW Illinois News.

The calls in Marion included 148 fires - 56 structure fires, 16 vehicle fires and 71 other fires. The fire department also responded to five calls for ruptures, explosions or overheating.

In all, the department saw $434,876 in fire loss - or about $2,938 per fire.

The department also received 187 false calls, including two malicious calls and 185 other false calls.

One fire service member was injured in fire-related incidents.

The Marion Firefighters' Pension Fund, which has 25 active employees and 14 retired or inactive employees, was $463,187 in debt as of April 2016, according to the fund's mandated filings with the Illinois Department of Insurance. That amounts to $3,130 for every fire in 2016.
