Herrin FD responds to 49 fires in 2016

Herrin Fire Department responded to 134 calls in 2016, according to data from the National Fire Incident Reporting System obtained by the SW Illinois News.

The calls in Herrin included 49 fires - 28 structure fires, six vehicle fires and 15 other fires.

In all, the department saw $64 in fire loss - or about $1 per fire.

The department also received 85 false calls, including three malicious calls and 82 other false calls.

One fire service member was injured in fire-related incidents.

The Herrin Firefighters' Pension Fund, which has 13 active employees and nine retired or inactive employees, was $551,379 in debt as of April 2016, according to the fund's mandated filings with the Illinois Department of Insurance. That amounts to $11,253 for every fire in 2016.
