The Paul Simon Public Policy Institute at Southern Illinois University Carbondale will celebrate its 20th anniversary on May 4.
Former Illinois Gov. Jim Edgar will speak at the 6 p.m. ceremony in the Student Center auditorium. Edgar authorized the institute in honor of the former senator in 1995, the university said.
Jak Tichenor, acting director of the institute, welcomed Edgar’s involvement in the celebration.
“We are delighted that Gov. Edgar will be joining us to reflect upon Sen. Simon’s living legacy through the institute that now bears his name,” Tichenor said. “Gov. Edgar was literally present at the beginning of the institute, and we deeply appreciate his continued support of the nonpartisan approach to public policy development that Paul began here 20 years ago this spring.”
The announcement said a series of lectures will be sponsored by the institute this spring on topics such as childhood poverty and school budgeting.
