Carbondale has been recognized by the League of American Bicyclists as a bronze level Bicycle Friendly Community.
The coveted award is only granted to communities dedicated to serving the cyclist community.
Not only does this program help communities like Carbondale celebrate their commitment to creating bicycle-friendly neighborhoods, but it’s also changing the way communities assess their quality of life, green-living and transportation needs.
There are 408 Bicycle Friendly Communities across America. More than 870 applications for the desirable designation have been accepted since 2002.
Earlier this year, Carbondale drafted a comprehensive Bicycle Master Plan, which included several recommendations such as increasing the number of off-road bicycle facilities. The plan is available on the city's website.
