SIU offering weeknight martial arts, belly-dancing classes

Southern Illinois University (SIU) Carbondale can help you find a new way to get in shape, discover a new hobby or learn a skill with a variety of Life Long Leisure classes.

Several classes begin this month.

Instructors will lead each class at the Student Recreation Center. Classes are open to the public, will last through mid-November, and include women’s self-defense, karate, fusion belly dance and boxing. A Student Recreation Center membership is not needed to attend the classes, but a small discount is offered to current recreation center members.

Those interested in boxing will meet 5-6:30 p.m. Mondays and Wednesday at the Recreation Center Martial Arts Studio, today through Nov. 16.

Participants in the fusion belly-dance course will meet 7-8 p.m. Wednesday nights starting this Wednesday and running through Nov. 16 at the Recreation Center Dance Studio.

Kickboxing participants will meet 5:30-6:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Recreation Center Martial Arts Studio starting this Tuesday and running through Nov. 17.

Salsa dancing is offered 7-8 p.m. Tuesdays, starting this Tuesday and running through Nov. 15 at the Recreation Center Dance Studio.

Those interested in Shotokan karate will meet 6-7 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Recreation Center Dance Studio starting this Tuesday and running through Nov. 17.

Thai boxing participants will meet 6:30-8 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays starting today and running through Nov. 15 at the Recreation Center Martial Arts Studio.

 A women’s self-defense course will be taught 6:30-8 p.m. Thursdays starting this Thursday and running through Nov. 17 at the Recreation Center Mat Studio.
